Russell Sampson taught social studies when I was a ninth grader at Levy in 1975 and 76. But he was also so much more than a teacher. He was a mentor. His gestures of kindness and understanding made a lasting impression on me. He said he saw potential in me (which I didn’t see in myself). Because of his approach, I started to think that I could achieve things I hadn’t thought possible. I think of him often and am sad that I just now found out he passed away. This gentle giant of a man left an indelible mark on my life and thousands of other students. May he Rest In Peace. Mark Reed-Edwards

Dear Margo and family,
This is indeed sad news. Russ and I taught for ten years on the same team at Levy starting in the mid 70’s. He was a man of integrity, and a delight to work with. He never used his height to intimidate, but instead used humor, intellect, and his humanity to positively influence any outcome. He will live on in the good memories of his colleagues and students and in the ways that having known him changed us forever.
Rest In Peace, Russ.

I met Russ when I began my career at Levy Middle School in 1988. He was this gentle giant of a man. He loved talking about golf, teaching his girl's softball team the fundamentals of the game, but he especially loved speaking of his love for teaching social studies to his many students throughout his years at Levy and beyond. He took great pride in challenging them to think, understand and imagine, not just learn and memorize. Our many conversations were both enjoyable and insightful. He also spoke of his love for his wife Margo and his family! He was a gift to many, and will be sorely missed. May the family find comfort in the condolences and stories shared here.

Russ taught my daughter when she was a student at Levy, many years ago. He was creative, easy going and kind- what more could one ask for in a middle school teacher?
My sympathy to his family and all who loved him.
Rest In Peace, Russ.

Mr. Sampson was a giant of a man, physically and as a teacher. He gave his all in his classes and inspired the best work. He lit a fire for me as a student that has carried me quite far in my life. I remember so well some things we studied like the Galleon sea voyage game, and things he said, like “I’m not having you read this textbook so you’ll remember some minor fact about the Erie Canal, I want you to learn how to go into this book to get the information you want out of it.” The essence of teaching. And here I am 40 years later doing sort of the same work in the same field, internationally. Owe him not a small amount of gratitude and credit. My heartfelt condolences to Russel and the rest of the family. -Mike Henning
