We met Saby when my mom entered Van Duyn in January, 2015. His room was right next door to my mom's. We visited her often and when seeing Saby he would always ask about my family. He would go right down the line with my husband first and then our four sons. He was so sweet to visit with and many times I would invite him into my mom's room for some tea and a treat. He also loved when I brought him a pastrami sandwich from the Brooklyn Pickle or Panera chicken noodle soup. There are some who bring a light so great to the world that even after they have gone the light remains. You will be missed Saby.

Saby was such a wonderful person. He was in the next room to my best friends mom at VanDynn. We became good friends of his and would bring him sandwiches, treats and gifts at Christmas. He was such a kind soul. On several occasions We would bring her mom out for a walk in her wheelchair and would take her to the seventh floor. There was Saby sitting in a chair we would all sit next to him and visit for quite a while. My friends mom passed a year ago and we always wanted to go up to visit him but then Covid set in. We are so sorry we never got the chance to see him again. RIP Saby. You will be missed.

I miss my friend. Saby and I knew each other for many, many years. I got to know him in my role as a pastoral volunteer at Van Duyn Nursing Home. Each of my weekly visits with Saby were a delight. I don’t know if I’ve ever met a kinder, more caring person. Whenever I saw him, he always asked after my family and any friends I had mentioned on previous visits. He genuinely cared about my loved ones.
And what an intellect! Sometimes I’d refer to a person I saw interviewed on TV or a place I had visited in a foreign country and before I knew it, Saby was telling me all about the history, geography, architecture of the place and the former queens or princes of that country. I sat back and enjoyed the education this man of limited travel experience was able to provide me.
Saby, I will never forget you. I will always have you in my prayers. You accomplished something that we all can only hope to achieve – you made this world a better place through your loving presence in it.
God bless you!
Your Friend,
Tom Mueller
