Obituary of Dr. Klaus Schroder
Dr Klaus Schroder, 93, a resident of Parkrose Estates in Liverpool, NY passed away on February 25, 2022.
Klaus was born November 1st, 1928 in Germany to parents Martha and Fritz Schroder. He had an older brother Gerhard and younger sister Edith. Klaus followed in his father’s footsteps and pursued a career in teaching. He received his PhD in Natural Sciences from the University of Göttingen in 1954.
Klaus married his childhood sweetheart Marianne Ina Jahn on April 11, 1957 in South Australia. They had two sons, Gordon and Christoph.
In 1961, Klaus received an offer to join the faculty of the Chemical Engineering and Metallurgy Department in the L C Smith College of Engineering of Syracuse University. He taught generations of students over a 60 year career. He continued his fundamental metallurgical research at his south campus laboratory through 2015, after retiring in 2005 as Professor Emeritus. He published over 30 papers in peer reviewed journals, and held 4 US patents. He authored 2 textbooks on materials science. His financial legacy and commitment to education at SU has been underscored by his endowment of a professorship in the College of Engineering.
He lived a modest lifestyle enjoying simple pleasures. His favorite pastimes included going to the opera, reading the New York Times, taking long walks on the Erie Canal, eating ice cream with his sons, sipping cherry brandy, and spending time with his pet cat “Oscar”.
Klaus was a member of the ARC of Onondaga Board since 2005, and also chaired the Day Habilitation Committee.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marianne; siblings, Gerhard and Edith.
Surviving are his sons, Gordon and Christoph, a sister-in-law, and five nieces and nephews.
Special thanks to family friend Samantha Haun, the staff of Parkrose Estates, and his caregivers Amy, Nacirema and Ja'Hon, who provided love and support to Klaus in his time of need.
Funeral services were held on March 3rd, 2022 at White Chapel Memory Gardens in DeWitt. Deacon Stephen Manzene officiated. A gathering of family, and friends old and new attended the interment of both Klaus and his wife Marianne.
