My deepest condolences to the Hackney family. Our families lived near each other when Kirsten and Jason were very young and they were my favorite kids to babysit. It was a pleasure to 'catch up' a few years ago by email, and again remember Prof. Hackney's kindness and wit. May his memory be a blessing.

Janine: (and family). I too was a lucky one to be one of Dick's doctoral students. Learning of his passing has prompted a flood of many memories---graduate student research meetings at his home (Curtis was a little boy then!) , agonizing dissertation meetings, Friday night tacos, playing " I am woman" in the counseling office after Billie Jean beat Bobbie Riggs and clear pictures of him teaching Theories of Counseling and Research methods. I'm sure the memories will continue in the days ahead. I remember he once told me that if students weren't learning--it wasn't there fault, it was his responsibility. I took that philosophy to heart and endeavored to be that kind of teacher and supervisor. Dick was an adviser and a friend. Planting a tree seems perfect---the benefits will continue in ways we can never predict or imagine to those we will never know. A mentor does the same in the development of his students: ripples through the world in big and small ways. Dick has often been "on my mind" at times of professional decisions and dilemmas. His model of professionalism and integrity will continue and hopefully has been passed to students I have had the privilege to mentor. marilyn hutchinson

Janine and family - please accept my deepest sympathy.
While I was just one of Dick's countless masters students throughout his career, I am appreciative to have been able to benefit from his wisdom (and charm!) in the classroom. I enjoyed his dry humor and his passion to "raise" us future counselors. It saddens me to know that he is gone, but I am grateful that his contributions will live on for generations of future counselors.

I feel so very fortunate to have been mentored by Dick and later to have co-authored textbooks with him, and also worked collaboratively with his wonderful wife Janine as well. I remember so many things about Dick even though with the pandemic I had not seen him in a few years. He had the heartiest laugh. He dispensed the best advice. One day, as a grad student when I was fretting once again about some trivial thing, he said " If there is nothing to worry about you will end up finding something to worry about if you are not careful." That has stuck with me ever since, many years later. He had so much vitality and enjoyed life to the fullest. He brought the best of himself to the workplace and made innumerable contributions to the counseling profession. He touched the lives of hundreds of students in countless ways. He and I shared one thing: Being PKs! We commiserated about that!
He loved Janine and his three kids so deeply, from his heart. Dick, rest in peace.
