My sister and I took dancing lessons from Miss Shirley at the Cortland YMCA for many, many years. She was always patient, even with those of us with less than outstanding talent... She and her mom came down from Syracuse by bus every Saturday morning, almost never cancelling class due to weather. Her costume sketches were incredible! Such fun to be in her class! I came across her obituary purely by chance, but it brought back such incredible memories! I'm so sorry that she suffered with Alzheimer's. May she rest in peace, or dance like no one is watching, her choice...

So sorry to hear about Shirley Wombles. As you have said, she had an active life and did many great things for people. I visited Shirley a few times where she lived last. I was disappointed to see her house all packed up when I tried to visit and knowing that she was having memory problems, I knew that she had gone to live with a relative or to a facility. I could not find a neighbor next door who was home. And so returned to Buffalo, NY. At least her troubles are over. I really wanted to talk to her and will miss her. Again, so sorry to hear, LInda Rankin, 266 Wimbledon Ct West Seneca, NY14224

I was Miss Shirley's student from 1978-1985 Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Toe and Acrobats. So many awesome recitals! Miss Shirley and her Mother Barbara were wonderful very patient ladies. When ever I think of Miss Shirley I always remember her high heeled tap shoes I loved them. So many great memories!

Shirley was a treasured member of our Muscular Dystrophy Association telethon family for many, many years. She showed up early to answer phones, and often had her Mom along to help. She always was a soothing presence for the families, many who'd come in a little nervous about being on TV. We will miss her smile

I knew Shirley from MONY, and she was a close friend of the family. A wonderful, very intelligent and fun woman. She also made beautiful and delicious cakes for special occasions. She was a good soul, and she's now with friends and family, in a place where all are happy.

I knew her as Miss Shirley. I was one of her students starting when I was in elementary school right up to the year I graduated high school. She had such passion and pleasure in teaching kids that you couldn’t help but love her as she loved all her students.
Even after I aged out, my parents, sister and I still pinched in. My mom helped sewing costumes, my dad helped with scenery and my sister and I did a little of both. Dad and I even helped back stage.
Miss Shirley was a wonderful lady who will be always remembered and very much missed.

Dear Friends of Shirley,
Shirley was my neighbor for 25 years. A wonderful woman and friend. She had a lovely garden and cared for her house lovingly. I always enjoyed our chats sitting in her yard. I will miss knowing she is in the world. Rest in Peace, Shirl.

First she was my boss, then we became good friends, made a ceramic Mickey Mouse for my son. Then we became golf partners, then when I took retirement from MONY she persuaded me to job share with her for Russ Andrews, Northwestern Mutual. In all I have know her for at least 50 years. Great lady gonna miss her. RIP Shirley.
