I knew Shirley as a workmate for several years in an office of the Onondaga County Public Library downtown—and in fact it was my honor and pleasure to arrange her retirement dinner from the Library, which I think—or hope—she enjoyed as much as I enjoyed arranging it. She was a convivial, considerate, helpful, fun and competent worker whom we all liked and respected. But it was not until I had learned the story of the first great tragedy of her life—the premature death of her husband—and saw her experience the second great tragedy—the premature death of her son Bruce—that that I realized the real measure of the woman: her absolute strength, resolve and resourcefulness—and absolute loyalty to her family. Life goes on and she went on, cheerfully. She knew her duty and did it. They speak of the Greatest Generation and she was of that time, and in fact she was one of them, in character, determination and resilience. So I know that every member of her family is feeling besides sadness a very deep admiration.
