Obituary of Thomas Francis Heick

Thomas F. Heick, formerly of Eastwood, died August 22nd of complications related to diabetes and heart failure. He is survived by his wife Jeannette Machut Heick of 59 years of marriage; children Nancy Scherr (Thomas) of Buffalo, Kathleen (Kitty) Bersani (the late Frank A. Jr) of Dewitt, Thomas Heick (Kristine) of Georgia, Daniel Heick (Lynn) of Virginia, and Patrick Heick (Gretchen) of Massachusetts; 11 grandchildren, Danielle Scherr Ohl, Christopher and Matthew Scherr, Alexandra and Christian Bersani, Hunter and Gabriel Heick, Megan, Ryan, and Kayla Heick, and Tessa Heick; two great grandchildren Siena and Madelyn Ohl as well as Eileen Boutin (cousin), Mary Heick (sister-in-law) and several nieces and nephews. Tom was born on June 4, 1935 in Syracuse, to Joseph Philip Heick and Elizabeth Agnes Lahan, and was the youngest of seven siblings. He retired from the Syracuse Police Department and Niagara Mohawk. He was a graduate of St. John the Baptist and served in the Naval Reserves. Tom was active in professional and community groups, including the Bishop Grimes Community Players, Syracuse PBA, Maple Bay Anglers Club, the Boy Scouts, and served on the board of the Syracuse Police Federal Credit Union and the Pastime Athletic Club. He was predeceased by his siblings Sr. Mary Elise Heick CSJ, Jeanne Haller, Ann Hansen, June Walser, Joseph Heick, and Noreen Curtis. He was a faithful Catholic, and took pride in serving as Eucharistic Minister at Holy Cross in DeWitt, St Patrick’s in Chittenango, and Blessed Sacrament Church in Eastwood. Calling hours are on Friday, Aug 26th, from 4 to 7 PM at Goddard-Crandall-Shepardson, 3111 James Street, with a funeral mass on Saturday at 9 AM at Holy Cross Church in DeWitt. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to St Jude Children’s Hospital.
