Marvin E. Swanson
June 22, 2017
Marvin E. Swanson, 91, of Liverpool, passed away on Thursday morning, June 22. He was born in Minneapolis, MN in 1925 and settled in the Eastwood neighborhood of Syracuse, with his dear wife, Ruth. Marvin will be fondly remembered for his work and participation with the Eastwood Little League, Boy Scouts and many other youth organizations. Marvin was a dedicated and active parishioner of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, where he served as president of the Holy Name Society and Society of St. Vincent DePaul. Most recently, Marvin was a member of St. Joseph the Worker Church of Liverpool.
Marvin was a dedicated father and a loving and caring husband. For sixty-two years, his marriage to Ruth was the lens through which all light shined, and their bond was unbreakably deep.
As a young man, Marvin and his brother Glen purchased Muff’s Sweet Shop located in Eastwood and successfully operated the candy shop-soda fountain until 1954. Following Muff’s, Marvin was a sales representative for the Borden Dairy Company before becoming head operating manager for Swanson Cleaners at their Colvin Street Plant until retiring in 1989. Not long after retirement, Marvin and Ruth moved from Eastwood to Springmoor retirement community in Liverpool, where Marvin would again engage in service to his community as a member of the Liverpool Zoning Board of Appeals and as a member of the Homeowners Association.
Marvin was preceded in death by his wife Ruth, his parents, Oscar and Elizabeth Swanson and brothers: Norman, Alvin, Vernon and Glen. Marvin is survived by his five children and their spouses: Stephen and Patricia of West Hurley, NY, David and Miriam of Camillus, NY, William and Barbara of Walnut Creek, CA, Donald and Nancy of Trumansburg, NY, MaryBeth and Drew Culp of Apalachin, NY, as well as his grandchildren: Christopher, Victoria, Michelle, Tyler, Jesse, Kevin, Sarah and Jayden.
Family and friends may call on Sunday, June 25 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Goddard-Crandall-Shepardson Funeral Home, 3111 James Street. A funeral mass will be held Monday, June 26 at 9:00 a.m. at Blessed Sacrament Church, in Eastwood. Marvin will be interred at St. Mary’s Mausoleum, E. Genesee Street, DeWitt.
