Professor Siegfried Snyder, 87, passed away peacefully on Saturday June 16 at his home with his wife, Renate by his side. Born in Konigsberg, East Prussia, Siegfried came to the United States in 1952 when he joined the Army, and was stationed in Germany, reunited with and married his wife. They then settled in Connecticut, moved to Rhode Island. After graduating from the Rhode Island School of Design, they moved to Syracuse where he eventually became a respected Professor in the Syracuse University School of Architecture. At the school he was very well considered, friendly and respectful to all, and was never the subject of harsh criticism from anyone. He taught Basic Design and also welding classes in “The Bauhaus”. He established many bonds with his students that continued until his death. 
He was a gifted artist and sculptor, he had several shows in the community. He learned to write using calligraphy because “nobody could read my writing”, and was featured in a story on a local television station and the local paper.  His letters to The Editor in the Syracuse Newspapers were many and epic.
He became interested in local politics and in particular the Eastwood Community where they settled.  He was active in the Chamber of Commerce, the Onondaga Historical Association, the Eastwood TNT and other community organizations. He was at one time was known as a “Community Activist”. He was always one to speak his mind, and had a knack of seeing the bigger picture.
Siegfried was always interested in antiques, especially machinery and tools. He was an avid collector of typewriters. He was a great help at the OHA in organizing their typewriter collection. The family ran an antiques business for many years, participating in the Great American Antiquefest, and had booths at several local antiques shops.
Siegfried is survived by his loving wife of 63 years Renate, his daughter Barbara and her longtime partner Gene St. Pierre along with many family and friends world wide.
A very special and heart felt thank you goes to Hospice and especially Tammy for all the wonderful care he received during the past few difficult months.
Calling hours will be at the Crandall Goddard-Crandall-Shepardson Funeral home, 3111 James Street from 5 until 6 on Friday, June 30 with a brief service to follow. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Midler Avenue Wesleyan Church or Hospice of Central New York.
