Obituary of Richard W. Barry

Please share a memory of Richard to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Richard (Dick) Barry, age 89, passed peacefully from this life on Friday, April 10. He is survived by his wife of forty eight years, Martha (Ball) Barry, their daughter Sharon Royce (Chad) of New York City, NY, his daughters Alice Barry (Robert Jones) of Oswego, NY, Diana Bome (John) of Syracuse, NY, MaryAnne Barry (Paul Schmidt) of Allison Park, PA, brother Roland Barry and sister-in-law Janice Barry of Syracuse, NY, six grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Bernard Barry, sister Jacqueline Peterson, one grandson, and one great grandson. Born and raised in Syracuse, NY, one of four children of the late Worthington and Evelyn (Durand) Barry, Richard was diagnosed with polio at the age of 10. The virus affected the mobility of his left arm, but this disability didn’t stop him from living life to the fullest. From a young age Richard loved to tinker and fix things; he was a Mr. Fix-it his entire life. His favorite classes in school were shop and auto. In his early twenties Richard worked driving delivery trucks locally, later graduating to tractor trailers, and eventually drove cross country routes. After his formal retirement, Richard didn’t want to stop driving, so for many years worked driving limousines and delivering golf carts. Richard found time to pursue many hobbies in his lifetime. He loved motorcycles and they were his preferred transportation method. He enjoyed many hunting, camping, and hiking trips in the Adirondacks. He loved to snowmobile, and enjoyed going to the beach, boating, and fishing at his cottage in Sandy Creek, NY in summer. Upon retirement, Richard and Martha spent winters in Mesa, Arizona, enjoying many friends and family there. Richard will be remembered as a helper; whether it was a ride, or assisting in building or fixing something, he was there and uncomplaining. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Richard Barry are requested to be made to: Hospice of CNY https://www.hospicecny.org/memorial-donation.
