Obituary of Daniel J. Carmichael

Daniel Carmichael, 88, of Syracuse NY, passed away peacefully on Monday May 11, 2020 with family by his side after a brief illness. He was born in Syracuse to the late Daniel and Katherine Carmichael. Dan retired in 1987 from Niagara Mohawk after 38 years of dedicated service. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and devoted friend to many. Dan was an active volunteer in many organizations, giving of his time freely. Close to Dan’s heart was the Syracuse Council of the Boy Scouts. He spent over 50 years working at Sabattis Boy Scout Camp in Long Lake, NY. Dan was awarded the Silver Beaver, the highest honor given by the Boy Scouts for volunteerism. He was a lifetime member of the Pastimes Athletic Club. Dan was instrumental in organizing blood drives and was a devoted blood donor of over 16 gallons. He was a lifetime member and past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus, Rome Council #391. After retirement, Dan relocated to the Adirondack Mountains, where he was a volunteer ambulance driver for the Inlet EMS, a member of the Inlet Historical Society, Chamber of Commerce and the Inlet Search and Rescue team. Dan was a communicant of and volunteer at St. Anthony’s Church in Inlet, NY. He also was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Old Forge Council. Dan loved spending time with family, camping, traveling the country and beyond as well as sitting by the lake enjoying a good campfire and cold beer. Dan was predeceased by his wife Barbara. He is survived by his wife of 30 years Kay, sons Tom (Kelly) and Tim (Clare) Carmichael, daughters Kelly (Mark) Wheeler, Carrie Carmichael and Kristen (Romeo) Perlas; step-children Rob Wilkins and Janice (Dennis) McMahon; grandchildren Katie, Sara, Brian, Kristen, Alexandra and Stephanie, step-grandchildren Riley and Brody McMahon, sisters Meredith Blewett and Carol Vollmer and a host of nieces, nephews and many good friends. Dan is also survived by his loyal feline companion Missy. A private funeral mass for family was held on May 16, 2020.
